Malm Orstad will assist Dolphin Drilling in the work to install the first home produced MRT in Singapore in August. It was a satisfied project manager who transported the large hydraulic cylinders to the harbour for shipping via Amsterdam to Singapore in the middle of May.
— For several years we have performed maintenance and repairs on different tension systems both for Dolphin Drilling and other companies, but this is the first time Malm Orstad manufactures a totally new MRT from the drawing board to finished product, says Project Manager Kjell Vidar Bygland who has followed the work from the start, approximately six months ago.
Dolphin Drilling is a Malm Orstad customer over a number of years, but it was not taken for granted that this order would go to the company at Voll.
— I was made aware of Malm Orstad via the Dolphin Drilling subsea manager, says Duncan G. Walker who is responsible for subsea in the Belford Dolphin RS project.
— This Norwegian supplier was initially unknown to me personally, but what I was told was so convincing that we chose to contact this Jæren Company as an alternative, he says. The Malm Orstad Project Manager, Kjell Vidar Bygland, ads that terms of delivery in this case was a fairly deciding factor.
Walker describes the first moves from Malm Orstad. They seemed promising.
— The technical specifications we received in the early stage spoke of quality, he tells and ads that he was impressed by what he saw when he during the early part of the cooperation visited the factory at Voll.
— Both the equipment and the production hall, as well as the professionalism Malm Orstad demonstrated, made an impression.
— When the new tensioner is installed on the drilling vessel in August, the existing tensioner will be overhauled and maintained. The same process is then repeated with the remaining seven cylinders onboard, he elaborates.
— If Malm Orstad is given the opportunity to be part of this, it means minimum four years of work going forward, says Bygland and speaks of a demanding but very exciting project so far.
Strict safety considerations
— We started on the drawing board about six months ago. The cylinder was moved out from the production hall in the middle of May. The last weekend we spent 30 hours on testing, says Kjell Vidar Bygland in Malm Orstad and credits the team, which really has performed well to land the project.
— The MRT system is used on rigs and vessels to ensure that the riser is as stable as at all possible, and is regarded as category one equipment, he says and ads that this entails the strictest safety considerations.
Duncan Walker in the Belford Dolphin RS project informs from his perspective that the change of equipment is a critical task that is followed with vigilance, and it is with a certain excitement that Project Manager Kjell Vidar Bygland looks forward to install the new MRT in Singapore in August.
“For several years we have performed maintenance and repairs on different tension systems, but this is the first time Malm Orstad manufactures a new MRT from the drawing board to the finished product.” Kjell Vidar Bygland, Project Manager.
Looking forward to August
Duncan Walker emphasizes that it has been important for Dolphin Drilling to facilitate a process that maximizes normal operation of the drilling vessel.
— It would for us be a disadvantage to change out the whole system at the same time. The solution we have reached we can live well with he says, and ads:
— I look forward to the installation of the new equipment in August.
